Pursuant to LA RS 13:1563 B. (1) The coroner may perform or cause to be performed by a competent physician an autopsy in any case in his discretion. The coroner shall perform or cause to be performed by a competent physician an autopsy in the case of any death where there is a public health risk and/or reasonable probability that the violation of a criminal statute has contributed to the death. An autopsy may be performed in all cases of infants under the age of one year who die unexpectedly without explanation. The autopsy shall include microscopic and toxicology studies.
Request for Autopsy Report
Individuals may obtain a copy of a completed autopsy report placing your request in writing and using one following methods:

To help expedite your request, please provide as much of the following information as possible.
Information Pertaining to the Decedent:
- Name of Deceased
- Date of Death
Information Pertaining to the Requester:
- Name of Requester
- Mailing Address
- Daytime Contact Number
- Relationship to the decedent
- Copy of drivers license or picture identification
NBext-of-kin may receive the first two pages of an Autopsy report free, howeverif this is a homicide case, no reports will be issued. There is a fee for an autopsy report for non-next-of-kin. Please do not send payment until you are notified that the report has been completed. Depending on the circumstances of the case and the laboratory tests that are required, the length of time necessary to complete each case may vary.

Proof of Death Letter are letters of confirmation that serve as Proof of Death for the Bureau of Vital Records of State of Louisiana. The Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office provides a letter of confirmation of each death that is reported to this office. This is not a letter that is intended to be provided to families of the deceased, however in circumstances where proof is needed immediately LPCO will provide a copy upon request.
